The OIA response shows correspondence amongst officials in relation to the “safe and fully reversible” description of puberty blockers in the period 22 August - 12 September. The Chief Medical Officer Dr Robyn Carey receives two emails from the public highlighting the poor basis for the claim. Carey queries the basis of the statement and proposes removing it. Another senior clinical advisors Dr Tim Jelleyman, Chief Clinical Advisor, Child and Youth Health agrees that concern about the statement is “appropriate”. A third advisor Dr Sayali Pendharkar, Deputy Chief Science Advisor initiates discusses the possibility of a puberty blockers systematic review –a project which morphs into the Ministry’s evidence brief.

Medsafe advisor Derek Fiztgerald advises that “providing information” on a drug in its use for an unapproved indication can be a breach of section 20 of the Medicines Act 1981.

The officials draft revised language and the website is updated on the 16th of September.
